The Iditarod is a dog sled race embracing Alaska’s history of human and K-9 companionship and takes place annually every March. The race begins in Anchorage and ends in Nome, McGrath is 329 miles from Anchorage on the Iditarod Trail. In McGrath, there is a checkpoint that can be visited by those with respect towards the animals and racers. There are opportunities to become a volunteer at any checkpoint. McGrath’s local radio station, KSKO, holds fundraising events during the Iditarod, such as the annual Spring Auction and BINGO.
